Comments about 3 in. x 21 in. Variable-Speed Belt Sander:

The squareness of the body help a person mentally "index" if they are square to the surface of the wood and parallel to the grain. I like the feel of the boxiness even tho the machine isn't too pretty. (Pretty only counts with the resulting product coming out as intended.)

Plan to replace graphite wear pads

Comments about Bosch 3 in. x 21 in. Variable-Speed Belt Sander:

I love Bosh tools! This belt sander is no exception but.... If you're doing a lot of sanding (as in 500 square feet of deck) plan to replace many of the graphite wear pads. They also track a lot of the graphite onto the rollers. Also the belt tension release lever pivots on a rivit held in place by a push on retainer that tends to back off of the rivit periodically. I've had to press mine back inot place several times. I plan to see if I can find a shoulder screw and nylock not to replace the rivit arangement. This sander does kick butt! It is as the right combination of weight and power. It handles nicely and can be as agressive as you can hang onto, but can still be very effective with minimal human effort. If it were not for the two defficiencies mention above I'd rate it excellent.

Very easy to controll, I like the fact it does not feel like it wants to take off and run down the board when you squeeze the trigger. I haven't used it alot but so far so good.

Bosch must have Changed this Unit

Comments about Bosch 3 in. x 21 in. Variable-Speed Belt Sander:

I've had mine for around 15 years. Most use has been 110 year old house exterior after scraping. gives tooth for paint and blends the leavings. Other common uses as well. It has seen much use, with much rest in between. Dust can get in and around the belt drive; requiring cleaning, or you'll break a belt due to build up. I keep a spare belt.

Yes the Graphite pad wears, but is not difficult to replace, simply order an extra or more the first time you need so you have a spare.

My greatest dis-satisfaction is the SCREAMing noise level; my neighbors even complained if I worked late. I am amazed that others find it quiet; hence "Something must have changed".

In ordering a repair part; variable speed switch, which I think is a commonly expiring part, I see my model number to be the oldest listed; So if these are now quiet, I would give it an easy four star rating.

I found the noise level very hard on my doubly ear protected hearing, I now have a Makita 3"x21", which is SO-MUCH - quieter - , and more powerful.

The down side to the Makita is it is also quite a bit heavier. You can one-hand the Bosch about columns and ceilings, and walls. Two handing on walls is not so very tiring; not so with the Makita. And the flat top/sides aren't there with the Makita, so vised use is not.

Comments about Bosch 3 in. x 21 in. Variable-Speed Belt Sander:

we have several of these sanders, great weight, feel. The problem is with the bottom plate, there are two screws that hold it down, that can come loose and dig into your project. As well the grafite rips where the screws are attached. You can't fix this because there is no sub structure under the plate. it truly needs a redesign. But for the small guy that pays attention great unit.

            • Q:

What is it with Bosch not making belt sanders? I haven't seen the 1274 on the market for several years and the 1276 seems to be pretty scarce as well. Is there anything equivalent? I need a belt sander and would prefer Bosch but any port in a storm, as they say.

The alternatives to the Bosch 3x21 sander would be the:Makita 9903,Porter Cable 352VS, and Hitachi SBV2.
